Description

Kaner is cultivated widely as an ornamental. Its common name is yellow oleander and is also called lucky nut in the West Indies.

It is an evergreen tropical shrub or small tree. Its leaves are willow-like, linear-lanceolate, and glossy green in color. They are covered in the waxy coating to reduce water loss (typical of oleanders). Its stem is green turning silver/gray as it ages.

Growing Conditions                             

Light Preference: Full Sunlight is best to plant’s growth and blooming but it can also grow in partial sunlight.

Water: It needs a lot of watering in beginning and later let the soil dry between waterings.

Temperature: 25-40ºC

Soil: the Standard mix of well-drained sand and peat.

Fertilizer: Fertilize regularly during the growing period.

Medicinal use: 

• Nerium has various medicinal uses and the leaves and flowers are thought to have actions as the tonic, cardiotonic, diaphoretic, diuretic, emetic and expectorant.
• Leaves and flowers are also used to treat malaria and as traditional medicine, it induces the termination of the embryo.
• The tincture or decoction is been used externally to reduce swelling and scabies.
• The root powder is an external remedy for hemorrhoids and ulcers around genitals.
• Leaves and bark are treated as the insecticide, rat poison and parasitic.

The plant of Indian oleander is thought to possess anti-cancerous activities.
